چکیده

Given the present cost of memories and the very large storage and bandwidth requirements of large-scale multimedia databases, hierarchical storage servers (which consist of RAM, disk storage, and robot-based tertiary libraries) are becoming increasingly popular. However, related research is scarce and employs tertiary storage for storage augmentation purposes only. This work, exploiting the ever-increasing performance offered by (par. titularly) modern tape library products, aims to utilize tertiary storage in order to augment the system’s performance. We consider the issue of elevating continuous data from its permanent place in tertiary for display purposes. Our primary goals are to save on the secondary storage bandwidth that traditional techniques require for the display of continuous objects, while requiring no additional . RAM buffer space. Multimedia Data Elevation under a Hierarchical Storage Model

Multimedia data storage is a critical issue in large scale applications. This paper proposes a frequency based multimedia data representation model which effectively guides data storage and elevation among the secondary and tertiary storage levels. Multimedia data are stored on the tertiary storage level and (based on certain popularity criteria) they are elevated on secondary level towards imp...

Navigation has added interactivity in nowadays multimedia applications which support effective accessing to objects of various formats and presentation requirements. Storage issues need to be reconsidered for the new type of navigational multimedia applications, in order to improve system’s performance. This paper addresses the problem of multimedia data storage towards improving data accessibi...

A Bandwidth Management Technique for Hierarchical Storage in Large-Scale Multimedia Servers

Using magnetic disks as a cache for tertiary storage has been shown to be an effective way to address the high storage costs of large-scale multimedia servers. We investigate a technique for managing the bandwidth of such a hierarchical storage design. In existing schemes, all data items are treated equally; and the same I/O rate is used to load data from tertiary storage when they are requeste...

Modeling, Design and Performance Evaluation of Interactive Distributed Video-on-Demand Systems

A large scale, distributed video-on-demand (VOD) system allows geographically dispersed residential and business users to access video services, such as movies and other multimedia programs or documents on demand from video servers on a high speed network. In this paper we demonstrate through analysis and simulation the need for a hierarchical architecture for the video-on-demand distribution n...

SLEDs: Storage Latency Estimation Descriptors

Managing the latency of storage systems is a key to creating effective very large scale information systems, such as web interfaces to satellite image databases and video-on-demand servers. Storage Latency Estimation Descriptors (SLEDs) are architecture-independent descriptions of the retrieval time of a unit of data. They describe the latency to the first byte, and the bandwidth expected. SLED...
